Scottish toxicologist and physician. MD, Edinburgh, 1819. Regius professor of medical jurisprudence and medical police (forensic medicine and public health), Edinburgh University, 1822–32; of materia medica and therapeutics, 1832–77. President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, 1838–40 and 1846–8. President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1869–73. Physician-in-ordinary to the queen in Scotland. Created baronet, 1871.
