Physician. Studied medicine at University College, London, 1831; St Bartholomew’s Hospital, 1832. Passed the examinations of the Royal College of Surgeons and Apothecaries’ Hall in 1834; studied in Paris, Heidelberg, and Berlin; MD (Berlin), 1836. Translated Johannes Müller’s Elements of physiology, 1837–42. Lecturer in forensic medicine, St Bartholomew’s Hospital, 1841; assistant physician, 1854; lecturer on medicine, 1855. FRCP 1846. Physician-extraordinary to Queen Victoria, 1859. FRS 1847.
