John Bennett
1814–97
Watchmaker and politician. Brother of William Cox Bennett. Assisted his mother in the family watchmaking business in Greenwich after the death of his father, 1829/30; established his own goldsmith and watchmakers business at 65 Cheapside, London, and promoted it vigorously through advertising and lectures, 1847–89; common councilman for Cheap ward, London, 1860–88; deputy for the ward, 1874–7; sheriff of London and Middlesex, 1871. Knighted, 1872.
