John Raphael Smith

Printmaker and print publisher. Educated at Derby grammar school. Established his reputation with a mezzotint of Joseph Banks. The primary interpreter in mezzotint of Joshua Reynolds’s paintings. Also produced popular prints. Established a European trade in prints until exports were limited by the French Revolution. Opened the Morland Gallery in Covent Garden, London, in 1793. Moved to Doncaster in 1808 and undertook commissions for pastel portraits.
