James Thomas Brudenell, 7th earl of Cardigan
1797–1868
Army officer. MP for various boroughs, 1818–37. Succeeded to the earldom, 1837. Joined the regular army, 1824; lieutenant-colonel and commander of the Fifteenth Hussars, 1832; commander of Eleventh Hussars, 1836; colonel, 1846. Brigadier-general in command of the Light Brigade of the cavalry division and leader of the ill-fated charge during the Crimean War, 1854.
