Analytical chemist. Clerk in a private bank, 1859; studied chemistry in his spare time. Worked at Deptford Chemical Works from 1864. Managing director of the Native Guano Company, set up to process sewage, 1868. Chemical analyst in Great Tower Street from 1872. Promoter of the Sale of Food and Drugs Act and principal founder of the Society of Public Analysts, 1875. Public analyst for Plumstead, Greenwich, and Deptford. Proprietor and editor (with John Muter) of the Analyst from 1876. Fellow of the Chemical Society and the Institute of Chemistry.
