Emil Odebrecht

1835–1912

Pomeranian-born Brazilian engineer and cartographer. Studied engineering at Greifswald; emigrated in 1856 to Brazil, where he was one of the founding colonists at Blumenau. Worked mostly in Santa Catarina and Paraná. Discovered the Iguaçu waterfalls in 1883. Mapped out the route for the rail link between Rio de Janeiro and Porto Alegre.
