Soldier, diplomat, and Sinologist. Fought with the British army in China in the First Opium War; interpreter, Hong Kong garrison, 1843; Hong Kong supreme court, 1845. Assistant Chinese secretary to the superintendent of trade, 1846. Vice-consul, Shanghai, 1852; Chinese secretary, Hong Kong, 1855; minister-plenipotentiary, Peking (Beijing), 1871; recalled to London, 1882; retired in 1883. First professor of Chinese at the University of Cambridge, 1888. Knighted, 1875.
