1828–83
Telegraph engineer. Chief engineer, Electric Telegraph Company, from 1861. Chief electrician, Atlantic Telegraph Company, from 1865. Formed a patent partnership with William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin) and Henry Charles Fleeming Jenkin. In 1874 used a cable galvanometer to investigate the ‘materialisations’ of the medium Florence Cook. FRS 1871.
