German entomologist, botanist, and zoologist. Studied medicine and natural science at Berlin where he habilitated in 1828. Professor of natural history and founder of the botanic garden at the forest school at Eberswalde, 1831–69. Specialist in the life and habits of forest pest insects. (DBE.
