Nikolai Nikolaievich Miklucho-Maclay

1846-88

Russian zoologist, anthropologist, and explorer. After being expelled from the University of St Petersburg for political reasons in 1864, studied at Heidelberg, Leipzig, and Jena, 1864–8. Worked on the comparative anatomy of various marine organisms. Explored much of Papua New Guinea and lived there 1871–2, 1876–7; explored throughout Micronesia and Indonesia. Founded a biological station near Sydney, Australia, 1881.
