Georg Meissner
1829–1905
German anatomist and physiologist. Studied at Göttingen, working with Rudolph Wagner on the nerves of the torpedo; became involved in a priority dispute with Wagner which lasted until 1859. Professor of anatomy and physiology, Basel, 1855; professor of physiology, zoology, and histology, Freiburg im Breisgau, 1857. Professor of physiology, Göttingen, 1860–1901. Worked mainly on the decomposition of protein compounds in the digestive system.
