Francis Lieber

b. 1798 or 1800 d. 1872

German-born educator and political writer. Studied politics, history, and law in Germany, where he was active in secret patriotic societies. Emigrated to the US in 1827; became a naturalised citizen in 1832. Active in educational and prison reform movements. Professor of history and political economy, South Carolina College, Columbia, 1835–56. Professor of history and political science, Columbia College, New York, 1856–72. One of the principal architects of the academic study of politics in the US.
