Diplomat. Joined the diplomatic service in China in 1853. Served as vice-consul or acting vice-consul in a number of posts from 1863. Vice-consul, Taku, 1868; acting consul, Chefoo (Yantai), 1869–70; Tientsin (Tianjin), 1870–72; consul, Chefoo, 1872.
