Julia Ward Howe

1819–1910

American poet, author, and female suffrage leader. Married Samuel Gridley Howe in 1843. Wrote for journals and published anonymous collections of poems in 1850 and 1857. Her poem "Battle hymn of the Republic" was published in 1862. Founded Woman’s Journal in 1870. Co-leader, American Woman Suffrage Association, from 1869; president, Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Association, 1870–7 and 1891–3. Involved in several organisations promoting the advancement of women.
