Campaigner for women’s higher education. Daughter of Samuel Ellis Batten, assistant master at Harrow School, and Caroline Batten, the daughter of John Venn (ODNB). Married Russell Gurney (ODNB) in 1852. A founder member of the Kensington Society, a women’s debating club. Assisted in the foundation of Girton College, Cambridge. Interested in spiritualism and mysticism.
