Elizabeth Crichton

1779–1862

Scottish philanthropist. A daughter of Robert Grierson, fifth baronet of Lag and Rockhall. Married James Crichton (1765–1823), a distinguished physician, in 1810. Used the money left in her husband’s will for charitable purposes to found the Crichton Institution, a mental hospital in Dumfries. Godmother of James Crichton-Browne, the son of William Alexander Francis Browne, first medical superintendent of the institution.
