Antoinette Louisa Brown Blackwell
1825–1921
American reformer, cleric, and author. Attended Oberlin College, 1846–50. Became an independent lecturer, speaking for women’s rights, temperance, and the abolition of slavery. Ordained minister, Congregational Church of South Butler, N.Y., 1853. Left the pastorate in 1854, owing to religious doubts. Co-founded the American Woman Suffrage Association, 1869, and other reforming organisations. Author of at least eight books on science, religion, and philosophy, 1869–1902. Minister, American Unitarian Association, from 1878. Minister emeritus, All Souls Church, Elizabeth, N.J., 1908. Honorary AM, Oberlin College, 1878; DD, 1908.
