Peter Guthrie Tait
1831–1901
Scottish mathematician and physicist. Studied mathematics at Edinburgh University and Peterhouse, Cambridge. Fellow of Peterhouse, 1852–4. Professor of mathematics, Queen’s College, Belfast, 1854–60; of natural philosophy, Edinburgh, 1860–1901. Published widely on mathematics and physics; published Treatise on natural philosophy (1867) with William Thomson (later Lord Kelvin).
