William Henry Seward

1801–72

American statesman. Governor, New York, 1838–42. Campaigned for the reform of education, as well as of prisons and the treatment of the insane. A leader of the anti-slavery movement. Served as secretary of state under President Abraham Lincoln, from 1860. (ANB, DAB).
