Theodor Ambrose Hubert (Theodor) Schwann
1810–82
German physiologist. MD, Berlin, 1834; became one of Johannes Peter Müller’s research assistants. Professor of general and descriptive anatomy, Louvain, Belgium, 1839. Professor of general and descriptive anatomy, Liège, 1849–72; of embryology, 1858–77; of physiology, 1858–79. Discovered pepsin and was one of the founders of cell theory.
