Moritz Schiff

1823–96

German physiologist. Studied biology and medicine, specialising in comparative anatomy and physiology, at Heidelberg, Berlin, and Göttingen; PhD, Göttingen, 1845. Professor extraordinarius of comparative anatomy, Bern, 1856; professor of physiology, Istituto di Studii Superiori, Florence, 1862–76; professor of physiology, Geneva, 1876. Studied the physiology of the spinal cord, cardiac contraction, and digestion, and was important in the development of physiological chemistry as a discipline.
