Frederic Ward Putnam
1839–1915
American archaeologist and anthropologist. Studied under Louis Agassiz. Curator of several museums in Massachusetts, and superintendent of the Museum of the Essex Institute, Salem, during the 1860s; director, Peabody Academy of Science, Salem, 1869–73, and Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard, from 1874. Permanent secretary, American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1873–98; president from 1898.
