Jan van der Hoeven

1801–68

Dutch comparative anatomist and anthropologist. Lecturer on zoology, Leiden, 1826–68. An adherent of Cuvier’s theory of catastrophism; believed in creation rather than evolution, attempting in his works to show how the infinite wisdom of the Creator is reflected in the harmony of the world’s creatures.
