Francisco de Arruda Furtado

1854–87

Portuguese naturalist. Born and educated on the Azores; worked as a clerk. Collaborated with the physician and teacher Carlos Maria Gomes Machado to establish natural history museums at Ponta Delgada and São Miguel. Adjunct to the zoological section of the Museum of Natural History, Lisbon, 1885–7; published a catalogue of its molluscs and shells. Specialised in malacology and anthropology. Died of tuberculosis.
