Mr. Murray wishes to arrange with you for the present edition of the “Descent of Man”, which we printed last Autumn & of which we have sold over 500 copies out of the 1000 printed & he proposes if agreeable to you to send his cheque for £105.0.01

CD recorded the receipt of £105 in his Account books–banking account (Down House MS) on 28 February 1876 under the heading ‘Murray profits on last 1000 of Descent (Capital)’. Descent 2d ed. was published by John Murray in 1874; the eleventh thousand was published in February 1875 and it is to this that Cooke refers (Freeman 1977; Publishers’ Circular, 16 February 1875, p. 130).
